Mezcal is the mother of Tequila, and the ancient practices employed by the of indigenous people of Oaxaca in producing this spirit with a distinct character and singular purity makes it a truly handcrafted distillate.
The word Mezcal comes from a preshispanic language, Metl, meaning Agave. Today the commonly used word for Agave in Oaxaca is Maguey. The mountains, plains, fertile valleys, tropical jungles and the Pacific Ocean all create differing growing zones for many varieties of maguey. The magueys take between 10-30 years to mature depending on the varietal and some magueys are only found in the wild.
Del Maguey (pronounced ma-gay), Single Village Mezcal, was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mescal visionary, Ron Cooper. He introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mescal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers of the remote villages of Oaxaca, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages.
