What started as weekend visits to the rolling hills of Cotswolds turned into a permanent move for Daniel Szor and his family. For Szor, moving out of his 30-year career in finance to become a distiller was the result of a moment of inspiration — one morning when he woke up and stared through the window into the neighboring barley field, he had a brainwave, `there’s barley all over Cotswolds, and nobody’s distilling it, let’s be the first’.

And that’s how the state-of-the-art Cotswolds Distillery was set-up in the unspoilt Cotswolds village of Stourton, under the expert guidance of veteran distiller Harry Cockburn. Uniquely located in a designated rural Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in South Warwickshire, Cotswolds, the first ever craft distillery pays tribute to its outsanding locales with singular innovative expressions from small batch whisky, English rye whisky to aromatic artisanal gins.

    COTSWOLDS SIGNATURE, SINGLE MALT WHISKY

    46% AbV – 700ml

The amber liquid is Cotswold’s first ever whisky.

It is made using local floor-malted Cotswold barley, two yeast varieties, Anchor and Fermentis, and softened and demineralised water sourced from the village. It is distilled in copper pot stills (named Mary and Janis) and aged in ex-Bourbon barrels and shaved, toasted, and re-charred casks to produce a rich, sweet, and fruity single malt.

Cotswolds Signature Single Malt Whisky is part of their Classics Collection and has deservedly picked up awards globally, including Silver at The World Whisky Masters (The Spirits Business) 2019, Silver at the International Spirits Challenge 2019, and Gold at the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2019.

As with premium whiskies, this easily sipped spirit is best savoured on its own, over ice, or with ginger ale and a slice of orange.

Tasting Notes: The spirit is malt-forward with bold and fruity notes. It hits the nose with spicy toasted cereals, malt, and almonds and just a bit of caramel leading into richer fruit tones. On the palate, it has a creamy texture with vanilla, honey, spices like black pepper and sweet citrus stone fruits. There is a hint of woodiness in the back. The finish has a good length, is slightly oily but with some pepper, woodiness and treacle.
