Demerara has established a reputation over the last 300 years for producing the best rums in the world. El Dorado, which means ‘the Golden One’ is Guyana’s 24 carat offering to the world. Though not quite in the form of ingots, this Golden One is produced in the Demerara Distillery which sits alongside the swaying plantations of tall, sweet cane on the banks of the Demerara river. With its 9 different and original stills (operational from the 18th and 19th century), marques and traditional skills intact, Demerara is in the enviable position of being the only distillery in the world to offer such a variety and range of over 20 different styles of rum. Their unique flavour and taste owes as much to the tropical climate of this lush country of Guyana – which translates from its Amerindian name ‘land of many waters’ – as to the know-how and traditional wisdom garnered over three centuries of rum production. Spurred on by the universal acceptance of their rum in the international markets, Demerara Distilleries has gone on to develop an unrivalled portfolio of ‘Age Statement Rums’.

    12 YEAR OLD

    40% AbV – 700ml

This fine aged Demerara Rum is produced by master distillers since 1670. Matured for at least 12 years in oak casks, this rum is hand blended to achieve its uniquely smooth, rich character, the quintessence of Demerara style rums. The 12 year is a multi Gold Medal winner with a golden character. A sure delight for the most discerning drinker, it can be savoured on the rocks or in a classic cocktail.

Tasting Notes: Lush tropical fruit and spice nose with hints of honey and dark sugar. Round, mellow, full bodied palate with rich flavours of fruit and spice. The finish is delightful and elegant.

EL DORADO AGED 21 YEARS RUM

    43% AbV – 700ml

This richly crafted aged rum is part of a family of cask-aged rums. El Dorado 21 is a special blend of rums from three of Demerera Distillers’ stills: Enmore (wooden Coffey still), Versailles (single wooden pot still), and Albion (Savalle still). These rums are aged in 45-gallon oak barrels for between 21 to 25 years.

Produced near the equator in Guyana, the spirit has locally sourced Demerara sugar to create a full-bodied, smooth, faintly sweet, dry-yet-fruity rum.

Fittingly, the aged rum was called one of the world’s greatest rum drinking experiences (98 out of 100) judged by the Beverage Tasting Institute of Chicago.

A rich sipping rum, it is best enjoyed on its own or with some ice to temper the sweetness.

Tasting Notes: The deep mahogany coloured spirit has a decadent aroma, buttery and inviting, with warm sugars, the spice of a Christmas cake, chocolate, and tobacco. The mouth is smooth and mellow, filled with rich toffee and coffee. It gets a smoky quality from sultanas and dates, and there are chocolate and brown spices, mid-palate. The finish is long and nutty with hints of fried banana and raisins, fading into layers of chocolate and almond.
