In 1896, José Ruiz-Berdejo started cultivating the vines of the family’s estate, Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza. He was a stock keeper so, the wines he made went to larger sherry producers and exporting bodegas. In 1931, his daughter, María Ruiz-Berdejo Alberti, acquired a small winery and moved production there. In 1954, her husband Emilio stopped being a stockkeeper and began to sell and export their own sherry.

The collection of Lustau wines developed properly in the 80s — they started aging some, decided on the signature bottle shape, and started creating new expressions.

In 1990, Lustau merged with a Spanish family-owned Luis Caballero, themselves with a history of producing Ponche (a digestif liqueur). Together they started producing quality wines, sherries, and vermouth, which are aged in six cathedral-like bodegas, with tall windows, high ceilings, and sand floors.

Today, Lustau is considered one of the finest sherry producers in the world. They are the only producers making wines in all the cities in the ‘sherry triangle’: Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The collection includes biologically aged sherries, cream sherries, amontillados and the Almacenista collection — sherries from small, independent bodegas.

    LUSTAU VERMUT ROJO

    15% ABV — 750 ml

This red vermouth is a blend of two wines: a dry Amontillado and the sweet Pedro Ximénez. Both are aged for ten years in a traditional ‘Solera y Criaderas’ and blended with 10 herbs and fruits like sage, wormwood, orange peel, and gentian. This creates a powerful and fruity vermouth, well balanced with the acidity and sweetness.

It won Gold at Meningers International Spirits Award 2019.

Possessing a deep mahogany colour, this rich nutty spirit is a good aperitif, and best had on the rocks, garnished with an orange peel or wedge.

Tasting Notes: There’s ripe fruit and bright citrus on the nose, with some nuttiness, and herbs like sage and rosemary. On the palate, it is sweet, balanced, and rich with subdued herbal notes. A bitter and long finish, with more nuttiness and notes of chocolate cake and almond.

    LUSTAU VERMUT BLANCO

    15% ABV — 750 ml

A dry and crisp fortified Fino sherry and a sweet Moscatel blend to form this vermouth. Once blended, these two sherries are macerated with wormwood, chamomile, marjoram, rosemary, gentian, and orange peel in American fino casks. The botanicals add freshness of citrus, herbaceous notes, some astringency, and subtle bitterness.

The vermouth won Gold at Meningers International Spirits Award 2019.

Enjoy it on the rocks garnished with a green olive, slightly chilled, or added to a Martini.

Tasting Notes: It has a strong aroma with an herbal accent and subtle minerals in the background. The palate is velvety and balanced. The citrusy, floral sweetness is offset by acidity and tart notes of gooseberry. It has a bittersweet and faintly nutty finish.
